Latest Match Report – Airbus vs Caernarfon

Laura Borley’s goal was enough to ensure Caernarfon’s perfect record of 10 straight wins in the North Wales Women’s League came to an end today.

A tight affair at The Airfield saw the Wingmakers eventually ground the Canaries.

A close encounter throughout the 90 minutes saw both sides have their fair share of chances but it was the best move of the game, on the hour mark, which resulted in the first, and only goal.

The Wingmakers played the ball out from the back, Becky Lees switched play through Abby Williams who stroked the ball out wide to Dani Knox. A great cross from Knox was met with superb timing from Borley who volleyed the ball firmly into the roof of the net leaving the keeper no chance.

The away side played some great football switching play effortlessly at times but they could not get through a resolute Airbus defence who were solid as a rock from beginning to end.

When Caernarfon did manage to break the defence Sinead Crawford was ready behind the sticks to make some great saves. One in particular halfway through the first 45, where she got down low to her left to push the ball out of harm’s way epitomised the grit and determination of the whole side.

The teams went into half time goal-less, both knowing that the first goal was going to be crucial. Both sides remained the same at the start of the half choosing not to make any substitutions, so there were no surprises when the second half began in the same fashion, neither side being able to get the breakthrough.

It was beginning to look like the defences were going to be the winners on the day with neither side willing to relinquish play for any length of time.

With the possibility of a stalemate growing ever the more likely it was the Wingmakers who got the crucial goal to take the lead.

It was a goal which Airbus are becoming accustomed to as they played the ball out from defence with composure and allowed those in front of them to finish the move off in style.

Caernarfon didn’t let the goal fluster them and came on strong, using both wings and bringing the midfield into the game with their continuous shifting of play.

Some superb last ditch tackling from Jen Broughall and Mari Edwards ensured that nothing more than a corner was given away.

Caernarfon spent the last ten minutes firmly in the opposition half but could not find the cutting edge they required as Airbus refused to concede.

A superb win for Airbus sees them climb the table to fifth for the time being with Caernarfon staying firmly at the top.
